August 16, 2024: Sowing and Reaping
"Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds that you plant."
⁃ Robert Louis Stevenson
The challenging times we are living in and the prevalent attitude that I should be looking to find where I can get something for nothing makes me wonder if this wouldn't be a good time to reinstate the teaching of farming in our schools. Agrarian societies of old knew better than to go looking to harvest crops that they had not planted. They understood the simple truth that good crops, just like good lives, are the reward for preparing the soil and then planting the seeds that would later reap bountiful crops. If there was no prior soil preparation nor planting of seeds for what we were looking to harvest, there would be nothing to later on harvest. Bright futures, i.e. good crops, come as a result of preparing the soil, i.e. getting an education and planting the proper seeds i.e. deciding what we want to do with our lives and then tending to our fledgling crops by providing water and fertilizer, enabling them to grow into what we were looking for when we planted the seeds. The farming process pretty much sums up what each of us must do in order to have the kind of successful life so many of us desire. Repeat after me "I reap what I sow." Again. "I reap what I sow!" Last time. "I reap what I sow!" Any questions? Now, let's get some sowing going!
