September 20, 2024: Quality of Life
"The reason I exercise is for the quality of life I enjoy." – Kenneth H. Cooper
When I was a young man, healthy and strong, the concept of "quality of life," did not exist for me. Even in my 50s, although I had seen a slow decline in the health of some individuals who were my seniors, in their 60s and 70s, the importance of the "quality of life"had still not come into my consciousness. Once I was in my mid 60s and then 70s, I began to realize that, although I was still in relatively good health and physically able to do the things I wanted to do, so many of my peers, classmates, and others, had declined severely, and in too many cases, needed assistance just doing the daily basic activities i.e. getting in and out of bed, feeding themselves or going places in the car. The concept of "quality of life" then became crystal clear! Good health was no longer seen as a given, but rather a blessing! Why I still enjoy good health I don't know. I do know that I did come to realize early on in my life that we were given only one body, and it had to last the whole time. The only place we had to go if we ruined this body was a pine box. So, regardless of your age, whatever the current state of your health, be thankful to God for it, and for your own sake, and your family's sake, please do your best to take care of yourself mentally and physically. You will be glad you did!
