September 13, 2024: Self-Talk

"The love you give to the world starts with the love you give to yourself. Fill your cup first."
⁃ Bayu Prihandito

Talking to ourselves is one of the most important things we do in this life. The words we use, whether positive or negative, have a profound affect on who we are and who we have the opportunity to become. If you think cruel words, degrading words from others are impactful on us, think of how much more powerful are the words we utter to ourselves. None of us is perfect. All of us have multiple flaws. Fortunately, we are simply a reflection of the world around us; a world made up of individuals who are also less than perfect. Remember, when you see someone whom you admire and consider better, more talented, more whatever than you, remind yourself that just because you don't see the flaws, does not mean that they are not there. They are there. All of us struggle with the challenge of trying to force ourselves to do what we want ourselves to do, and we are all challenged as we wrestle with our own efforts to stop doing things that we know are not good for us. As one of my daughters sometimes reminds me, "the struggle is real." The struggle is real, and you and I along with everyone else are experiencing the same struggle. Self control is the challenge, and to whatever extent we are able to exercise self-control, the trajectory of our lives is nothing more than a reflection of how we have done and are doing in that battle. Be kind and be patient with yourself. Never give up trying to be better and you are going to be just fine.
