September 11, 2024: Body Care
"Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live in." – Jim Rohn
If we are able to enjoy a fair amount of good health when we reach our 60s, 70s and 80s, it is probably because we understood the importance of taking care of our bodies by not abusing them, when we were younger. For most of us, the excesses of our youth are making their displeasure known to us as we age. Although we can't turn the clock back and do better the next time, there may still be time to mitigate some of the abuses we still practice, i.e. smoking, excessive drinking, or refusing to give our bodies adequate exercise. That kind of behavior, when we were young, stupid and ignorant, may be excusable, but now that we've had some time to mature and experience the deterioration caused by our youthful abuses, we have little excuse for continuing to abuse ourselves. Why not at least give doing better a try? What say we start by trying to become reacquainted with our toes. For some of us, those 10 little digits may have not only become out of reach, but they might also be out of sight unless we are sitting down. No matter. This seems to be a good time to mention the Body part of DetroitBodyMindSoul.com. The Body element of my website pertains less to exercise and more to movement of the body parts i.e. arms, neck, hips, spine, etc. There are already enough fitness gurus available. I have no intention of becoming one of them. As an 82-year-old man with arthritis in practically every major joint in my body, including the spine, my soul focus is on maintaining and perhaps increasing movement in said joints. As a precursor to the simple videos I will be providing in the coming weeks,
if you are age 60 or older, please join me now in doing something that I have done daily for many years and that is touch or reach towards your toes 10 times in the morning after you arise, and do the same, 10 times in the evening before you go to bed. This will do wonders for your ability to pick up something you've dropped on the floor. If you join me in this little adventure, and the other movements to follow, the quality of your life will improve, dramatically. That is a promise! Now touch those toes!
