October 11, 2024: What is Impossible?
"Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible.'"
– Audrey Hepburn
Life is full of things that are hard. Life also presents us with many things that are very difficult, but not impossible. The word 'impossible' gets far more respect and use than it deserves. Here are a few examples of things that are truly impossible: a man sprouts wings and flies like a bird, a 40-year-old man grows 5 inches in one year or, an athlete high jumps 12 feet using the Fosbury flop. Here are some things that are very difficult and yet not impossible: a high school dropout goes on to earn a PhD from Harvard (Todd Rose), a blind person runs the Boston Marathon (Jill Konopka), blind high school teacher wins National Teacher of the Year honors (Kathy Nimmer). Let's not dishonor the above overcomers by using the word 'impossible'for things that are just very difficult. At one time, the world believed that it was humanly impossible for a man to run a mile in under four minutes, until Roger Banister did what the world believed was impossible by running a mile in under four minutes. No matter what our stage in life, or our level of achievement to date, a change of mind and a change of heart can turn what used to be thought of as impossible, into one of our personal achievements. Outside of the category of things that are truly impossible, lies a vast number of things where it is our decision as to whether they are impossible or not. What we decide is all that matters. Impossible or not impossible - that's our call!
