May 25, 2024: Aldous Huxley
"The whole aim of education should be to teach a person to do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done whether he feels like it or not."
⁃ Aldous Huxley
The above quote by Aldous Huxley has always been one of my favorites. It occurred to me as I read it again yesterday that it normally applies to education, but it has a direct application to parenting as well. As parents, one of our primary duties is to raise children who understand the importance of maturing into responsible and competent adults. This means that they will be goal-directed enough to decide what they want to do with their lives. Then, possibly with our guidance, they can set and follow through on meaningful deadlines for the various steps on the way to their goals. Finally, and most importantly, we teach them the necessity of pushing past their own inertia and the possible negative drag of their peers input, to achieve their objectives, no matter what. Undoubtedly, there are other areas of our lives to which applying these same principles could reap, great rewards.
