There is a little appreciated aspect of happiness that we tend to overlook as we strive to live happy lives. That seldom recognized factor is Gratitude. If we were to focus less on the things that are missing from our list of desires, and learn to be grateful for the things we have, we may wake up one day and find that the state of happiness has overtaken us. If you believe in God, as I do, you recognize that this wondrous and beautiful world that we live in did not magically appear out of nowhere, but was created by something or someone. Even if there was no God, we should still be glad that we have the health that we have, the thinking power that we have, the ability to give and receive love; whatever we have that makes our existence more enjoyable. If all of us had exactly the same things, the same abilities, the same accommodations, the same intelligence, the same creature comforts, then there would certainly be nothing in particular to be thankful for. But when we seriously consider how much we enjoy conversing with friends, we should be thankful for that aspect of our lives. Not everyone has friends. We should be glad that we have the ability to walk. Not everyone has that ability. Some people are blind or deaf or dumb, unable to speak. If we don't have those afflictions, we should be thankful for that and not just take them for granted. Gratitude. Gratitude for who we are versus who we might have been, for what we are able to do without the many limitations that might have been placed on us. We all can learn to be more grateful and thus happier in this wonderful, challenging and awesome thing called life. Have Gratitude!
