"Rules for happiness: something to do, someone to love, something to hope for." - Immanuel Kant

The pursuit of happiness is something in which we are all engaged. Sadly, too many of us fall short in our pursuit of this most sought after human endeavor. Why is that? Generally speaking, obtaining a reasonable amount of happiness is something that should be within the reach of most, if not all of us. I can think of three essentials that are, in my opinion, needed for basic happiness. One, we all need a meaningful reason to get out of bed in the morning. Even if it's just to feed our guppy, we need a reason. Two, something worthwhile to do once we are out of bed and the guppy is fed, is also crucial. Third, we need someone to care about, who in turn cares about us. This is crucial! It can be a child or a friend, lover or spouse. Like it or not we need someone to love and to be loved by. Absent any of these these three things, our lives will be incomplete and most likely not very happy.
