July 8, 2024: Battle-Tested
"Persistence and resilience only come from having been given the chance to work through difficult problems." – Gever Tilley
Many of us grown-ups have been battle-tested by life and are therefore capable of withstanding and overcoming its many challenges. Numerous other adults were shielded from many life challenges and appear to be less capable of facing and handling the slings and arrows of this beautiful thing we call life. My fervent hope is that as we continue to do our best to raise our children and perhaps our grandchildren in ways that will encourage them to make good decisions while they are in their salad days with their limited experience. Then, later on in their adult years, they will not be faced with the challenge of good decision-making without having had prior practice while under our tutelage. I understand that many times it is easier for us to just make the decisions and keep things moving along, but the time spent now allowing them to make some of the decisions impacting them, will be far more important to their future decision-making skills and thus, the quality of their adult lives. It is much better to learn these skills at a young age, when the consequences are small versus the long ranging, far reaching effects of adult decision making.
A little inconvenience now could prevent some devastating choices in the future. Paying a penny now is better than the cost of a pound in the future.
