Ever notice how some people just seem to be optimistic, no matter what's going on around them? Many of us also know people who appear to have everything they need or want, and yet are still not happy; in fact, some can be downright dour in their outlook on life. People who have found a purpose for their lives seem to enjoy happy lives regardless to what might be going on in their lives at the moment. Purpose. If you are one of the too many, who have yet to find a purpose for your life, your level of happiness is probably fairly low. There is truly something special about waking up and knowing that you have things to do today that matter. It doesn't have to be something earthshaking. It could be as simple as visiting a sick relative or friend whose day you brighten up just by sitting with them for an hour once, twice or perhaps three times a week. Because you are making a true difference in that person's outlook on life, you enjoy a sense of purpose. Also, looking forward to another day of watching your toddler, explore her world is enough to bring meaning to your life. For each one of us, the activity, or thought that brings purpose to our life could be entirely different. Some years ago, when I was progenitor of a seminar entitled, "The ABC's of Building a winning life," I would ask the attendees "what is the purpose of a honeybee?" Or, I might ask "what is the purpose of a tree? "A fly?" After receiving input from a number of attendees, I would then answer my own questions, if they had not already answered them. Then I would get to my point by saying something like, "if bees and trees and even flies, have a purpose, surely a creation as magnificent as individual person also has a purpose." Then I would ask them point blank, "What is your purpose?" Very few could ever answer that question. If you are trying to find happiness, stop looking for happiness. Instead, work at discovering what your purpose is for being on this planet. There is something you were put here to do. That something and happiness are partners. When you find the one, you will have found the other.
