October 16, 2024: It’s Where You Finish!

There is nurture, there is nature. There is also reappraisal. As adults, we can intervene if nurture and nature came up a bit short.

Some things in our lives are far beyond our control; whether our parents wanted us or not, whether we were raised by one or two parents, also whether we received the affection or discipline we needed. Then, of course, there's the nature side of things: were we born smart or average, tall or short, attractive or plain. The list goes on and on. Consider this, once we have reached adulthood, and assuming that our life has not gone irretrievable off the rails, we have the ability as grownups, to reappraise our situation, to take stock of our shortcomings and our personal assets and make plans for what we want to do with the rest of our life. Our libraries are full of the biographies and autobiographies of people who have made the decision that nurture and nature be damned, they are going to make something of themselves regardless of where they started out in life. They are going to make their lives count! Always remember, it is up to us individually, to make the decision to quit or to go forward and make our lives count. And as the song written by the Manhattan Singers and performed in the play, 'Seesaw' reminds us "It's not where you start, it's where you finish, and you're going to FINISH ON TOP!" Nurture and nature be damned!

FINISH ON TOP!
