July 11, 2024: Stretch Yourself
"May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears."
– Nelson Mandela
When you decide on what your next life goal is, leave plenty of stretch-room because you will find that some of the skills you currently have will require stretching before you can fit yourself to the new tasks. The act of stretching our abilities is what forces us to grow as we experience different plateaus in our life's journey. It is at those plateaus that we realize some growth on our part is going to be necessary for us to reach the next summit. Hopefully, we have somewhere along the way adopted an attitude of consistent personal growth, so that as future opportunities present themselves, we are prepared to take advantage. We should all be a little frightened of having the Peter Principle catch up with us. It says that "we continue to get promotions until we finally reach our level of incompetence." Some of us have probably experienced supervisors who have reached that level. It is not easy to be supervised by someone who's out of their depth. The simplest way to avoid personal obsolescence is to continue to grow in knowledge and skills; looking forward to, and anticipating the future innovations and advances in our field. Fear of the future, with its boundless opportunities are shared by those who have stopped growing and have been "cooked in the squat." Let's instead, fearlessly welcome the future with its exciting innovations and previously uncharted waters! Let's boldly go where we've never gone before!
