Have you ever had the experience where someone gave you their word to do something and they did not do it? Do you remember how disappointed you felt? Whoever made the promise and did not keep it lost a ton of credibility with you, didn't they? Why is it that some people give their word very casually, sometimes with no intention of keeping it? Why is it that some other people promise to do something and come hell or high water, they are going to deliver on the promise? I have often wondered what made the difference between those two individuals. For some of us, our word is our bond. For others it is virtually meaningless. There is this thing called 'character' that is not easily defined, but it is easily recognized. People of character tend to be very reliable. When they say they're going to do something, they pretty much do it. Those are people of character. They are the ones we like to be on committees with because they are going to do what they say they're going to do, without making excuses. They are the coworkers whom we know we can rely upon to complete assigned tasks. Here is a fairly standard definition of character:
A "person of character" is someone who possesses strong moral qualities, ethical principles, and a reputation for honesty, integrity, and reliability, consistently acting in accordance with these values... Striving to be a person of character seems like a worthy goal; a goal truly worth pursuing. I wonder what profound difference it would make in each of our lives if we had a reputation for honesty, integrity, and reliability. Something to ponder and perhaps pursue!
