Are you a victim of stinkin thinkin? Does it often seem like the world is against you? Are your children driving you to the brink? Are you unhappy with your present job or partner? Do your relationships start off fine and then fizzle for no apparent reason? If any or all of these apply to you, it may be time for a re-appraisal of your attitude and expectations. To my way of thinking, stinkin thinkin and an unhealthy attitude are pretty much the same. Man is such a wondrously made creature that even years and years of practice at pessimism can actually be reversed. It takes a lot of time to get really, really good at being negative. Some of us have put in the time and have become really good at focusing on life's dark side. The good news is that all that practice at expecting the worst rather than the best, can be undone by a mind that's made up to look harder for the bright side of things. We human critters really do have the power to change our lives, by changing our minds. The vigilance required to transform a here-to-fore negative attitude, to a gradually more and more positive one, is a battle worth fighting and winning. Here is the gist of what it will take to move a player negative meter closer and closer to the positive side: we will have to become more argumentative and less compliant with that little voice in our heads that chooses to take the negative route. We must stand up to the negative thoughts and counter them so that they will at least allow for the possibility that we can be and do better. It really is a matter of personal choice. If you need to choose a different route for your life and different outcomes than you have been tolerating, why not choose a better way of living? The next time that negative Nell in your head tells you, you can't do something, tell her "yes I can!" Or, 'you're not smart enough to do that,' say "yes, I am!" Here are a couple of other suggestions for changing to a more positive way of thinking: stop wallowing in the bad news on TV, that you can't do anything about. And, avoid hanging out with negative people. Constantly swimming in a cesspool of negativity will only make your life stink. Now is the time to get rid of stinkin thinkin! Why not start today?
