April 11, 2025 What Are You Thankful For?

"Gratitude turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend." - Melody Beattie

Listen to this meditation on audio:

Every day you and I wake up in a world we didn't make; in a home we didn't build; and eat food we didn't grow. We should be thankful for that. We drive cars we didn't make. We go to jobs we didn't create. We breathe air that is not of our making. We love parents, friends, and others that were somehow placed in our path. We inhabit bodies not of our choosing. We feel the warmth of the sun through processes we barely understand. We should be thankful for that. We really, really, really should be thankful. Reaching, perhaps tiptoeing, to pull something from a shelf or bending to retrieve something from the floor; miracles of our wondrous anatomy. Be thankful. Our miraculous eyes are able to distinguish objects simply by using sensors that can distinguish between the different wavelengths of the light entering them; give thanks for that. Our body contains a heart that has somehow been beating since the day we were born. What or who keeps it beating? Give thanks for that! What is interesting about all of this is that creatures who are fearfully and wondrously made have the temerity to take all of those miracles for granted. Yet, we fully expect our children to be thankful for all that we provide for them. We even have the nerve to be personally insulted when they don't. I sometimes wonder what God, or whoever you think provided this incredible cosmos, feels when we don't appreciate what has been done for us. Be thankful! Even if you don't know who provided this incomparable thing we call life and living, be thankful. It's the very least you can do!
