October 16, 2026 It’s Okay to Ask for Help

“Asking for help does not mean that we are weak or incompetent. It usually indicates an advanced level of honesty and intelligence.” – Anne Wilson Schaef

Let me tell you a silly story. Imagine you’re trying to build the tallest tower of blocks ever. You stack and stack and stack. But you can’t reach any higher! Do you give up? Or do you ask someone taller to help you add a few more blocks on top?

If you ask for help, you get a taller tower! If you don’t ask, you stay stuck.

A lot of people think asking for help means they’re weak or dumb. But that’s backwards! Asking for help actually means you’re SMART!

Think about it: doctors ask other doctors for help. Teachers ask other teachers for help. Even superheroes work in teams! Nobody knows everything or can do everything alone.

When you’re stuck on a math problem, asking for help means you want to learn. When you’re feeling sad and you talk to someone, asking for help means you’re brave. When you can’t reach something and you ask for help, you’re being smart, not weak!

Some kids don’t ask for help because they’re embarrassed. They think, “Everyone else understands. I must be the only one who doesn’t get it.” But guess what? Lots of other kids are probably confused too! You might be helping them by asking!

Other kids don’t ask for help because they want to do everything themselves. That’s nice, but some things are just too hard to do alone. And that’s okay! We need each other!

Life is better when we help each other. Your teacher WANTS to help you learn. Your parents WANT to help you. Your friends WANT to help you. But they can’t help if you don’t ask!

Asking for help is like using a tool. If you need to cut a piece of paper, you use scissors, right? You don’t feel bad about using scissors. You just use them! Asking for help is the same thing. It’s a tool that makes things easier.

And here’s something cool: when you ask for help and someone helps you, they feel good too! Remember what we learned about helping others? It makes people happy! So by asking for help, you’re actually giving someone a chance to feel good.

There’s no prize for doing everything alone. There’s no award for never asking questions. But there IS a better, happier life when you’re brave enough to say, “I need help.”

So next time you’re stuck, confused, sad, or just need a hand, remember: it’s okay to ask for help. It’s more than okay – it’s smart!

Action Step: Think of something you’re struggling with right now. Today, ask someone for help with it. Notice that the world doesn’t end – in fact, things get better! Practice saying, “Can you help me with this?”
