July 22, 2024: Life - Define Yourself

"Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner."
⁃ L'au Tzigane

So many of our young people today seem to be obsessed with what other people think of them. Social media's powerful influence in their lives should be very concerning to us all. Many of them have relegated responsibility for defining who they are, to people they may not even know or care about. Is that possibly taking the easy way out; allowing someone else to say who I am, rather than doing it myself? Accepting the assessment of my personal worth by persons unknown to me is pretty risky, if not downright dangerous. Each one of us, whether young or not, has the responsibility for building our own lives and making our way in this world. Under no circumstance, should anyone, other than ourselves, set the standard for who we are, or who we become. That is our sole responsibility; far too important to entrust to anyone else! Let’s take the bull by the horns, and accept responsibility for defining Who We Are. That is no one else’s job, but ours.
