Having a good attitude toward life is a learned skill. It truly is all about our perspective in any given situation. There are a few things in life that are truly critical. There are many things in life that may appear to be critical, but with further examination we find that they are not. The challenge for all of us is to constantly examine those things which assume more importance than they actually have. Life and death situations can be truly critical. Here is a poignant question asked in a line from one of my all-time favorite books by Og Mandino, "The Greatest Salesman in the World." The protagonist, asks the question "What can take place before the sun sets which will not seem insignificant in the river of centuries?" What a powerful question to ask ourselves anytime we are getting too upset or too agitated. After having read or recited that question hundreds of times, I developed a simple question to ask myself anytime I might be placing too much importance on a particular situation. I ask myself "how important will this be 10 years from now? If whatever this situation is, won't be important 10 years from now I might be giving it too much importance right now. A good attitude and thus a good life really does hinge on our ability, in any given situation, to assign the proper long-term importance to whatever is being discussed or thought about at the moment. Perspective. Keeping things in proper perspective is one of the major keys to living a good life and maintaining a good positive and optimistic attitude. Perspective!
