December 6, 2024: Everything Will Be Okay

"Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional."
⁃ Chili Davis

How old are you? I don't mean in chronological years, I mean in your way of thinking, in your way of looking at the world and the changes going on in it. How old are you? Are you able to roll with the punches, the new punches that life is delivering today? Today's punches are different than those of our youth. Do you, as our parents used to think when we were growing up, that the world is going to hell in a hand-basket? Have you noticed overtime that each generation seems to feel the same way about the new generation? If we truly pay attention to what is going on around us, we will notice that the world is still changing as it was changing when we came up; perhaps a little faster, and to our way of thinking a little more radically, but if we take a step back and look at the change, we already know that as time goes by, change continues to evolve, but at an ever increasing rate. And because we, hopefully understand the increasing rate of change, I trust that we have adapted our expectations to that metamorphosis. If not, life for us can be very alarming. We may feel like we've lost lost our way; that everything is spinning out of control. Well, I would postulate that the world is not going to end, even though it may look like it is. Things may be difficult. I can still remember hearing my Uncle Bill with his classic statement "everything's gonna be all right." It didn't matter what was going on; whether it was the assassination of President Kennedy or the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. While we were fighting wars and wondering what's gonna happen to the world, Uncle Bill reminded us that "everything's gonna be all right." That doesn't mean we're going to like what's happening, but it does mean that we are going to survive it. And I think that's the real point. No matter what happens around us we are going to be all right. Chaos in the world is not new. Tyrants coming to power is not new. And yet, the world has survived for thousands of years of this constant up and down, good and bad history. So, in order to keep ourselves sane, it's probably a good idea to step back every now and then, take a look at what's going on and realize that there is nothing new under the sun. Good times and bad times have always been the plight of man. Disasters and tragedies have likewise visited mankind throughout the ages. That is not going to change so we might as well get used to it and recognize that one way or the other, we are going to be okay. We are survivors and innovators, and we will find ways to make the best of whatever situation we have to face. Fret not! Everything is going to be okay!
