Listen to this meditation on audio:
I will state at the outset that I don't presume to know what all good relationships look like. The blending of the two different personalities has many possible variations. That being said, I have a feeling that most of us recognize a good relationship when we see one. So, what clues do we pick up on that tell us we're looking at a good relationship? The word chemistry comes to mind. Chemistry might be the first thing we sense between individuals as they interact with each other; the tone of voice, the facial expression and attentiveness of the one listening as the other is speaking. Even the fluidity with which one partner pauses to allow the other to enter the conversation, without the other person having to interrupt in order to take part. Cordiality is another concept that can give hints as to whether the couple is fairly in alignment or somewhat combative in their belief systems. The level of kindness shown between the two might give us an idea of how much mutual respect they share. Also, what kind of glances they share; do they smile, smirk, or scowl at one another? Whichever type of glance it is, there's a lot of information revealed during those moments. I will end this short muse with one of the most telling characteristics of a good relationship; do the partners appear to be good friends? There is, in my opinion, no other characteristic more important than this: are they good friends? These brief comments on how to recognize a good relationship are not intended to be exhaustive, but rather to give some important hints as to the strength of an observed relationship. So, if you are in a relationship that you want to last for a long, long time, you would do well to work at building as many of the above mentioned good-relationship traits as you can. I guarantee your relationship will be much better and stronger if you do.
